Captain Courageous Comics #6 is the sole issue published under this title — a rare Golden Age one-shot, cover-dated March 1942 and on-sale January 9, 1942, produced by Ace Magazines' Periodical House Inc. imprint. The 68-page full-color anthology collects six superhero and adventure features: the lead story "Captain Courageous vs. The Black Mayor" (art: Harry Sahle, 11 pages) pits the red-and-blue-costumed supernatural hero against the corrupt Black Mayor [Max Gort]; next comes the origin and first appearance of The Sword [Arthur Lake] (10 pages), a new hero whose next appearance would be in Lightning Comics #14; and the origin and sole appearance of The Lone Warrior [Stan Carter] (11 pages). Rounding out the issue are the Pacific naval adventure "Typhoon Tyson" (9 pages), "Kay McKay, Air Hostess" (art: George Wilson, 9 pages), the single-page gag "Luke and His Magic Flute, Ya' Gotta Dance" (art: Lou Paige), the strip "Paul Revere Jr.", and the text story "Range Reptile" by Ralph Powers. The cover — a patriotic wartime image of Captain Courageous in action — is by Dave Berg, later famous for five decades at MAD Magazine.

Captain Courageous appeared in Ace Magazines' Banner Comics from issue #3 to #5; issue #6 was renamed Captain Courageous Comics. That was the only issue which appeared under his own name. He then appeared in Four Favorites from issue #5 to #28. The issue is published during the first months of American involvement in World War II, and its content reflects the patriotic urgency of the moment: Captain Courageous is described as a supernatural being who comes to the aid of brave people who ask for courage, fighting Nazis with super-strength, flight, and limited invulnerability. Ace Magazines was operated by Aaron A. Wyn and his wife Rose Wyn, publishing comics between 1940 and the end of 1956, with superhero output concentrated in the early 1940s Golden Age.

Today, Captain Courageous Comics #6 is a key Golden Age issue for several reasons: it contains the first appearances of The Sword and The Lone Warrior; it is the sole issue of its title, making it an inherently scarce one-shot; and Captain Courageous has re-entered the spotlight through modern revivals, most notably appearing in flashback in Dynamite Entertainment's Project Superpowers #0 (2008), and forming part of the Super-Mysterymen team in the Project Superpowers: Chapter Two Prelude one-shot. These comics are in the public domain, and various publishers and creators have used them since. The issue is freely available via both Comic Book Plus and Digital Comic Museum, and has been reprinted in full color by modern POD publishers.
