Forbidden Worlds #8 (American Comics Group, August 1952) is a pre-Code horror anthology from the second monthly issue of ACG's supernatural flagship, behind a cover by Ken Bald. The documented contents move through three of the genre's most durable engines. In the first, a young couple inherits a necklace from her uncle — an anthropologist — and discovers the hideous secret attached to it, a variation on the cursed-artifact story that ACG returned to again and again. In the second, the last survivor of an ancient family feud inherits his rival's castle and very quickly regrets the bequest. The third is the standout premise: a sinister travelling circus exhibiting strange creatures that seem all too human, a carnival-horror conceit that would be recycled for decades afterward. Interior art comes from Art Gates, Harry Lazarus, Al Camy and King Ward — the core of the freelance pool that ACG relied on across its whole line — under editor Richard E. Hughes.

Forbidden Worlds launched in July/August 1951 as a dime comic subtitled "Exploring the Supernatural!", the companion to ACG's Adventures into the Unknown, the medium's first ongoing horror title. ACG was a small, resolutely independent New York publisher founded by Benjamin W. Sangor and co-owned by Fred Iger, and its horror books cultivated a house style distinct from the competition: atmospheric, often wry, and far lighter on gore and sexual content than the EC and Harvey titles of the same year — one reason both ACG horror books survived the 1954 Senate subcommittee hearings and the Comics Code without wholesale reinvention. Issue #8 sits at the commercial peak of the boom: the series had gone monthly one issue earlier, and the page count was already sliding — from 52 pages at launch through 48 and 44 down to the 32–36 pages that would become standard by that autumn. The series ultimately ran 145 issues to August 1967 and won the 1964 Alley Award for Best Regularly Published Fantasy Comic.

What makes issue #8 worth reading today is precisely its ordinariness — this is the pre-Code horror comic as monthly industrial product rather than as canonical masterpiece. The cursed heirloom, the inherited castle and the freak-show circus are the genre's working vocabulary, executed at speed by capable journeymen for a dime, and they document what a 1952 American child actually encountered on a spinner rack far better than the handful of famous EC issues do. It is also a snapshot of an economy in compression: fewer pages, tighter stories, monthly deadlines, two years before the censors arrived. And because the 1952 material is generally treated as public domain in the United States, this number remains freely readable through Comic Book Plus and the Digital Comic Museum.
