Meet Merton #1 (1953) is a Golden Age teen-humor comic book in the Archie mold, following the everyday hijinks of teenager Merton and his pals. The debut issue plays out the genre's familiar gentle-comedy beats — in one story, a con-artist named Chris tries to swindle Merton by selling him a broken-down outboard motor. The book mixes longer gag stories with short single-panel comics, all pitched at the wholesome, light-comedy audience that Archie Comics had made one of the most reliable sellers of the early 1950s.

The title was published by Toby Press, a New York comics outfit best known for its connection to Al Capp's organization and its Li'l Abner comic books. Meet Merton is most notable today for its creative team: the issue features early cartooning by Dave Berg — years before he became famous for MAD magazine's long-running "The Lighter Side of…" feature — alongside Mell Lazarus, the future creator of the celebrated newspaper comic strips Miss Peach and Momma.
