Bang-Up Comics #1 (December 1941) is the debut issue of a short-lived Golden Age anthology from Progressive Publishers, Inc., released in the opening weeks of America's entry into World War II. Like most comics of its era, the 68-page issue packs in a variety of features: it introduces Cosmo Mann, a patriotic sun-ray-wielding hero defending America against enemy tanks; and "Buzz" Balmer, a youngster accidentally shrunk by his scientist father's "Minus-Beam" miniaturizing ray, drawn by Buck Rogers artist Rick Yager. Rounding out the book are a gender-swapping science-fiction tale (schoolteacher Mary Lee transformed by Professor Amazo), assorted gag panels, and sports-trivia text features.

The title is a product of its wartime moment. Cover-dated just as the U.S. mobilized, its lead stories lean heavily on military and anti-Axis themes — Cosmo Mann repels invading armies, and Buzz Balmer would go on to "battle dictators" in the next issue. The book is also a snapshot of the crowded small-publisher landscape of 1941, when dozens of fly-by-night outfits rushed anthologies onto newsstands to ride the superhero boom that Superman had ignited three years earlier.

For modern readers, Bang-Up Comics #1 is a genuine public-domain curiosity.
