Debbie Dean, Career Girl #1 (April 1945) is a crime-mystery adventure comic published by Civil Service Publications, collecting reprints of Bert Whitman's syndicated newspaper strip about a sharp, resourceful female newspaper reporter. Debbie Dean is an "ace newspaperwoman" who chases the truth into danger — in this debut she uncovers mob connections behind boxer "Scarless" O'Hara, helping him beat a frame-up and falling in love with him along the way. The issue also features a six-page comics adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's The Murders in the Rue Morgue, plus a Simp O' Dell backup strip credited to Sol Hess.

The book is a notable artifact of 1940s "career girl" and Good Girl Art comics. Created by Bert Whitman, Debbie Dean was pitched as "a smart girl for smart readers," distinguishing her from the more slapstick good-girl features of the era. The strip had run in newspapers since January 1942, and Civil Service Publications — a tiny publisher whose entire comics output was just Debbie Dean #1–2 and a single Vic Jordan issue, all in 1945 — repackaged it for the newsstand. The newspaper strip was later banned by the censorship board in 1949 after Whitman used the word "dope."

Today Debbie Dean, Career Girl #1 is prized by collectors of strong-female-lead and reporter-heroine comics, of Golden Age Good Girl Art, and of obscure single-publisher rarities.
