Flaming Love #1 (December 1949) is the debut issue of a short-lived Quality Comics romance anthology, headlined by a Bill Ward cover and lead story. The issue collects five self-contained tales: Tyranny Broke My Heart — the cover story, in which a Communist agent is deployed as a honeypot to seduce and compromise an American industrialist — plus Desperate Choice, Sacrifice of Love, My Sin of Jealousy, and Accessory in Love, the last a gangland-adjacent story featuring Elsie Donovan and the Kapec family. At 36 pages for a dime, it is a standard newsstand package: no recurring cast, no continuing characters, just five closed melodramas aimed squarely at the postwar young-adult reader.

The book arrived at the peak of the romance comics boom. After Simon and Kirby's Young Romance (1947) proved the genre could outsell superheroes, every publisher piled in; Quality alone fielded fourteen short-lived romance titles, many with art by Ward and Reed Crandall, and the line earned a reputation for being more sophisticated — and more risqué — than its competitors. Flaming Love is also a document of a specific moment: the Cold War had begun bleeding into every genre, and the lead story is one of the more striking examples of espionage paranoia colonising a form supposedly about hearts and hemlines. Ward, best remembered as the creator of the pin-up icon Torchy and later a fixture of Playboy's cartoon pages, was unusually well suited to the assignment.

Today the issue is worth attention for three reasons. It is a rare Cold War / romance hybrid, a genre collision that almost no other publisher attempted so directly. It is a compact showcase of Bill Ward's romance work, a large body of output — plausibly a hundred-plus Quality romance books — that remains far less catalogued than his Torchy material.
