Forbidden Worlds #14 (American Comics Group, February 1953) is a six-story anthology under a Ken Bald cover — pencilled and inked by Bald himself — and it is the issue where the series' science-fiction instincts start pushing hard against its horror ones. "Million-Year Monster" has an atom-bomb test wake something enormous out of the deep, a full twenty-one months before Godzilla reached Japanese cinemas and with the same anxiety driving it. "The Time Destroyer" sends a traveller into the past, where he accidentally alters history and has to fight his way back to the future — which, in this book, means 1953. "The Awful Letter" is the pure revenge piece: a scientist posts a cursed letter to the man who cheated him out of his inventions. "Terror at Sea", "Spectre of the Skies!" and "Payment in Full!" complete a 32-page, full-colour, ten-cent package. Interior art comes from Jon L. Blummer (whose story GCD indexes explicitly as science fiction), Paul Gattuso with inks by Dick Beck (on the story featuring Professor Rigby, Jill Rigby, Kelvin Jones and Mike), Pete Riccia and Al Camy, under editor Richard E. Hughes.

Forbidden Worlds launched in July/August 1951 as a dime comic subtitled "Exploring the Supernatural!", the companion to ACG's Adventures into the Unknown — the medium's first ongoing horror title. ACG was a small, resolutely independent New York publisher founded by Benjamin W. Sangor and co-owned by Fred Iger; the corporate name on the paperwork at this point was Preferred Publications, Inc. of Buffalo. Its horror line kept a house style distinct from the competition: atmospheric, often wry, and far lighter on gore and sexual content than the EC and Harvey books of the same year — one reason both ACG horror titles survived the 1954 Senate subcommittee hearings and the Comics Code without wholesale reinvention. What makes #14 historically legible is that this drift toward science fiction happened before the censors forced it: the Code would later push the title decisively into space wars and giant robots, but the ingredients were already here in early 1953.

Read today, issue #14 is one of the better-documented numbers in the run, largely because its material kept being reprinted — Dark Horse's Forbidden Worlds Archives, AC Comics' Crypt of Horror and the Gwandanaland public-domain line have all reached for it. "Million-Year Monster" is the draw: an American atomic-monster story from the same cultural moment that produced The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, written for children, sold for a dime, and published while above-ground testing was still routine news. And because the original 1953 material is generally treated as public domain in the United States, the issue is freely readable through Comic Book Plus and the Digital Comic Museum — though the modern reprint editions emphatically are not.
