Frisky Animals on Parade #1 is an anthology of short funny-animal gags aimed squarely at young readers: Neddy Bear, the penguin Icicle Ike, the trio Tick, Tack and Toe, and Dopsy Durvy each get an untitled story, rounded out with a one-page Diggy the Derrick strip, two one-page fillers by Milt Hammer, and a prose piece called The Positive Ermine. Almost none of it was new. The issue is composed of reprints drawn mostly from Frisky Fables Vol. 4 (1948) #4, with art credited to Al Fago and the Jason Comic Art Studio. The GCD index confirms a bimonthly schedule, a ten-cent cover price, 36 pages, Comics Code approval, and Ruth Roche as editor — and notes the oddity that the indicia title reads simply "Parade."

The source material was one of the more distinctive funny-animal properties of the 1940s. Frisky Fables ran monthly from 1945 to 1950 across Novelty Press, the Premium Group of Comics and Star Publications, each issue collecting short strips and activities by Al Fago, Milt Hammer and C. W. Winter. Fago's style was softer and more storybook-inflected than the Terrytoons-derived slapstick dominating the genre — his stories lean on fairy-tale framing, magic objects, and gentle moral reversals rather than chase gags. Fago went on to become managing editor at Charlton, where he created Atomic Mouse, Atomic Rabbit and Timmy the Timid Ghost. By 1957 the artwork was a decade old and being cycled through a very different publishing operation: Ajax-Farrell, a low-budget outfit repackaging bought-in inventory under a Comics Code seal.

That recycling is exactly what makes the book worth a second look. The title barely existed — three issues appeared, dated September 1957, November 1957 and January 1958, before the numbering was handed off to Super Spook (Farrell, 1958 series) #4. Number-shuffling on this scale was a survival tactic in the post-Code contraction: cheap reprints under a fresh logo, kept alive just long enough to hold a slot with the distributor, then flipped into whatever genre looked more sellable that quarter. Frisky Animals on Parade #1 is therefore two documents at once — a pleasant sample of Fago's late-forties work, and a small piece of evidence about how the American comics industry was scraping by in the years right after the Code arrived.
