Hi-Ho Comics #1 (1946) is the debut issue of a short-lived funny-animal anthology published by the small St. Louis–based Four Star Publications. Set in the cartoon world of Hi-Hoville, it strings together gag stories starring a menagerie of anthropomorphic characters — Lil Chief Hotshot, the hep-cat band duo Kitty and Bob, Eddie the Elephant, Killer-Diller and Monty Monk, and Daffy Dragon — alongside puzzle pages, rebus features, and text fillers aimed at young readers. The humor is fast, slangy, and packed with 1940s pop-culture riffs (one story parodies "Frankie Sinodora," a stand-in for Frank Sinatra).

The book is notable for its creative talent punching above the publisher's obscurity: a striking, high-contrast cover by the celebrated L.B. Cole, and interior work by a young Howie Post (later of Anthro and newspaper-strip fame) inked by Ellis Chambers. Like many tiny postwar outfits, Four Star produced only a brief run — three issues — before the title vanished, making original copies genuinely scarce on the collector market.

For collectors and animation historians today, Hi-Ho Comics is a vivid example of the crowded mid-1940s funny-animal boom and of the eccentric, "anything-goes" cartooning of the era's smaller houses. Modern readers should note its period-bound, sometimes offensive caricature, flagged even by its own reprint publisher. As an early Howie Post and L.B. Cole artifact, the first issue remains a curiosity prized well beyond the title's footprint.
