Judo Joe #1 (August 1953) is the debut issue of an unusual martial-arts comic from the Jay-Jay Corporation, created and written by real-life judo expert Dr. Bernard "Barney" J. Cosneck with art by Paul W. Stoddard. The series follows Joseph "Judo Joe" Smith, a teenage judo prodigy at Mid-City High School who — often alongside his pal Spike and girlfriend Judy (sometimes starring as "Judo Judy") — uses his martial-arts skill to thwart dope peddlers, car thieves, hot-rodders, and schoolyard bullies. Each story doubles as a self-defense lesson, with techniques drawn directly from Cosneck's 1944 bestseller American Combat Judo.

The book is a fascinating product of its publishing moment.
