Forbidden Worlds #13 (American Comics Group, January 1953) is a six-story pre-Code horror anthology under a Ken Bald cover, and one of the more urban, modern-feeling issues of the series' early run. "The Man Who Knew All" has a dead reporter filing his story from beyond the grave — a conceit ACG returned to more than once, and one that turns the horror comic into its own newsroom. "The Case of the Subway Spectres" is the issue's sleeper: a traveller boards the wrong train in the lonely far reaches of Brooklyn and finds out who else rides that line, a piece of everyday-commute dread that translates remarkably well seventy years on. "The Wings of Darkness" sends a woman to an old house after a terrifying dream, to help a friend she may already be too late to save. "Invasion from Hades", "United in Death" and "The Thing Called Dharna" complete a 32-page, full-colour, ten-cent package, with interior art by Harry Lazarus, Sam Cooper, Charles M. Quinlan and Jon L. Blummer, under editor Richard E. Hughes.

Forbidden Worlds launched in July/August 1951 as a dime comic subtitled "Exploring the Supernatural!", the companion to ACG's Adventures into the Unknown — the medium's first ongoing horror title. ACG was a small, resolutely independent New York publisher founded by Benjamin W. Sangor and co-owned by Fred Iger; the corporate name on the paperwork at this point was Preferred Publications, Inc. of Buffalo. Its horror line kept a house style distinct from the competition: atmospheric, often wry, and far lighter on gore and sexual content than the EC and Harvey books of the same year — one reason both ACG horror titles survived the 1954 Senate subcommittee hearings and the Comics Code without wholesale reinvention. Issue #13 opens the title's second full year of monthly publication, settled at 32 pages and six features. The series ultimately ran 145 issues to August 1967 and won the 1964 Alley Award for Best Regularly Published Fantasy Comic.

Read today, issue #13 shows how far pre-Code horror had drifted away from the castle and toward the city. Where the 1952 issues traded in Egyptian tombs, jungle circuses and Salem witches, this one puts its ghosts on the subway, in the newsroom and in an ordinary suburban house reached after a bad dream. That relocation of dread into everyday American infrastructure is one of the genuinely underrated things the genre did in its last two years before the censors arrived — and it is the same move that horror comics and films would keep making for decades. Because the material is generally treated as public domain in the United States, the original issue remains freely readable through Comic Book Plus and the Digital Comic Museum.
