The Hand of Fate #8 is the debut issue of Ace Magazines' horror anthology under this title, cover-dated December 1951, and published bi-monthly at 10 cents. Despite being numbered #8 — a continuation of the previous crime comic Men Against Crime #7 — it marks a complete creative and editorial reinvention: the series' supernatural narrator, Fate (a hooded, robed figure), makes his first appearance here. Four horror stories fill the 36 full-color pages: the landmark lead "The Revolt of the Heads" (pencils: Lou Cameron, inks: Rocco Mastroserio) follows anthropologist Lasker, who learns dark magic from a Borneo witch doctor after his brother's massacre by hostile natives; "Canyon of the Living Dead" (Jim McLaughlin) sends an Andean pilot into a ghostly Shangri-La; "Death Howls by Moonrise" (Maurice Gutwirth, George Appel) delivers a cabin-in-the-woods werewolf tale; and "Monster of the Bayous" (Mike Sekowsky, Vince Alascia) unleashes a zombie pirate created by an accidental resurrection serum. Additional stories include a Faustian reporter's pact with the devil and a jealousy-and-bombing clock mystery. A text story — Unburied Dead, reprinted from Challenge of the Unknown — rounds out the issue. The cover, by Ken Rice, was later selected as the cover image for the 2018 PS Artbooks reprint collection.

The narrator character Fate was introduced in The Hand of Fate #8 as a virtually identical successor to The Unknown, a hooded figure who had appeared in Ace's Super-Mystery Comics since 1946 — occasionally stepping beyond his narrator role to interact with the unfolding human stories he was observing. Ace Magazines — operated by Aaron A. Wyn and his wife Rose Wyn under various imprints including Humor Publications, Inc. — published comics between 1940 and 1956, with horror titles including Baffling Mysteries, Hand of Fate, and Web of Mystery representing the height of their pre-Code horror output. The series ran bi-monthly from December 1951 to December 1954, comprising 19 issues (#8–25b), before Ace discontinued comics amid the industry-wide collapse triggered by the Comics Code Authority.

Lou Cameron, who penciled the lead story in this debut issue, is today recognized as a groundbreaking art master of the pre-Code era, with his innovative experimental layouts and surrealist tendencies described by critics as "Jim Steranko meets Graham Ingels." That work — "The Revolt of the Heads" — launched Cameron's signature horror run at Ace and introduced his long creative partnership with inker Rocco "Rocke" Mastroserio. For collectors, Hand of Fate #8 is the key issue of the series: it is both the first numbered issue under the Hand of Fate title and the first appearance of the Fate narrator character, making it a minor pre-Code horror key.
